Leukotriene B<jats:sub>4<\/jats:sub> was found to cause a rapid release of membrane\u2010bound calcium at physiologically relevant concentrations. This effect of leukotriene B<jats:sub>4<\/jats:sub> is stereospecific and its magnitude is decreased upon the transformation of leukotriene B<jats:sub>4<\/jats:sub> into its \u03c9\u2010hydroxy and \u03c9\u2010carboxy metabolites. The pool of calcium affected by leukotriene B<jats:sub>4<\/jats:sub> appears to be the same as that released by other chemotactic factors such as formyl\u2013methionyl\u2013leucyl\u2013phenylalanine (f\u2010Met\u2010Leu\u2010Phe). Similarly, preincubation with f\u2010Met\u2010Leu\u2010Phe results in a decreased responsiveness of the cells to the addition of leukotriene B<jats:sub>4<\/jats:sub>.
