The mounting resistance of\n                    <jats:italic>H. pylori<\/jats:italic>\n                    to antibiotics calls for innovative therapeutic strategies. Here, the proof\u2010of\u2010concept studies that support the development of a \u201ctrojan horse\u201d therapeutic strategy based on cholesterol\u2010grafted nanoparticles (Chol\u2010NP) to counteract\n                    <jats:italic>H. pylori<\/jats:italic>\n                    infection are depicted. The bacterium ability to specifically recognize and bind to surface grafted cholesterol is demonstrated by its adhesion to cholesterol(Chol)\u2010functionalized self\u2010assembled monolayers (SAMs) on gold substrates (2D Chol\u2010SAMs) in a concentration dependent manner, with optimal Chol\u2010SAMs prepared with 25% Chol\u2010polyethylene glycol (PEG)\u2010thiol in solution (75% tetra(ethylene glycol)\u2010thiol). These results further show that cholesterol functionalized gold nanoparticles (3D Chol\u2010SAMs, Chol\u2010NP) eradicate\n                    <jats:italic>H. pylori<\/jats:italic>\n                    at a minimum bactericidal concentration of 125 \u00b5g mL\n                    <jats:sup>\u22121<\/jats:sup>\n                    . Chol\u2010NP kill\n                    <jats:italic>H. pylori<\/jats:italic>\n                    through internalization and membrane rupture, as observed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Chol\u2010NP are cytocompatible (human gastric adenocarcinoma (AGS) cell line), non\u2010hemolytic and innocuous to bacteria representative of the gut microbiota (\n                    <jats:italic>Escherichia coli<\/jats:italic>\n                    and\n                    <jats:italic>Lactobacillus acidophilus<\/jats:italic>\n                    ).
