One emerging strategy for the production of solar fuels is to use photocatalytic biohybrid systems that combine the high catalytic activity of non\u2010photosynthetic microorganisms with the high light\u2010harvesting efficiency of metal semiconductor nanoparticles. However, few such systems have been tested for H<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub> production. We investigated light\u2010driven H<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub> production by three novel organisms, <jats:italic>Desulfovibrio desulfuricans<\/jats:italic>, <jats:italic>Citrobacter freundii<\/jats:italic>, and <jats:italic>Shewanella oneidensis<\/jats:italic>, self\u2010photosensitized with cadmium sulfide nanoparticles, and compared their performance to <jats:italic>Escherichia coli<\/jats:italic>. All biohybrid systems produced H<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub> from light, with <jats:italic>D. desulfuricans<\/jats:italic>\u2010CdS demonstrating the best activity overall and outperforming the other microbial systems even in the absence of a mediator. With this system, H<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub> was continuously produced for more than 10\u2005days with a specific rate of 36\u2005\u03bcmol\u2009g<jats:sub>dcw<\/jats:sub><jats:sup>\u22121<\/jats:sup>\u2009h<jats:sup>\u22121<\/jats:sup>.
