These oxynitrides, with rock\u2010salt\u2010like structures with different nitrogen contents, were synthesized by reacting MnO, Mn<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>O<jats:sub>3<\/jats:sub>, or MnO<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub> with molten NaNH<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub> at 240\u2013280\u2009\u00b0C. The anion contents and the Mn valence states were determined by combustion analysis, powder X\u2010ray diffraction, and X\u2010ray absorption near\u2010edge structure analysis. An increase in the nitrogen content of rock\u2010salt\u2010based manganese oxynitrides increases the valence of the manganese ions and reinforces the catalytic activity for the ORR in 1\u2009<jats:sc>m<\/jats:sc> KOH solution.
