An equally important problem is the reversible control at the available surface charges on COFs. Herein, a strategy for the reversible exfoliation, re\u2010stacking, and surface\u2010charge control of a propidium iodide based ionic covalent organic framework, <jats:bold>PI\u2010TFP<\/jats:bold>, using cucurbit[7]uril (CB[7]) induced molecular recognition, is reported. The surface charge on <jats:bold>PI\u2010TFP<\/jats:bold> facilitates its initial self\u2010exfoliation. However, complexation with CB[7] resulted in re\u2010stacking with concomitant decrease in zeta potential from +28\u00b13.0 to +0.004\u00b10.003\u2005mV. Addition of 1\u2010adamantylamine hydrochloride (AD) facilitates decomplexation of <jats:bold>PI\u2010TFP<\/jats:bold> from CB[7], resulting in exfoliation and an increase in zeta potential to +24\u00b13.0\u2005mV. Such control on the exfoliation, re\u2010stacking, and the associated regulation of the surface charge in <jats:bold>PI\u2010TFP<\/jats:bold> was exploited for controlling bacterial growth.
