Four of the complexes were cationic, with the general formula [(<jats:italic>\u03b7<\/jats:italic><jats:sup>6<\/jats:sup>\u2010arene)Ru(<jats:italic>\u03ba<\/jats:italic><jats:sup>2<\/jats:sup>\u2010<jats:italic>N<\/jats:italic>,<jats:italic>N<\/jats:italic>\u20102\u2010pydaT)Cl]X (X=BF<jats:sub>4<\/jats:sub>, TsO; arene=<jats:italic>p<\/jats:italic>\u2010cymene: <jats:bold>1.BF4<\/jats:bold>, <jats:bold>1.TsO<\/jats:bold> arene=benzene: <jats:bold>2.BF4<\/jats:bold>, <jats:bold>2.TsO<\/jats:bold>). The neutral cyclometalated complex [(<jats:italic>\u03b7<\/jats:italic><jats:sup>6<\/jats:sup>\u2010<jats:italic>p<\/jats:italic>\u2010cymene)Ru(<jats:italic>\u03ba<\/jats:italic><jats:sup>2<\/jats:sup>\u2010<jats:italic>C<\/jats:italic>,<jats:italic>N<\/jats:italic>\u2010PhdaT*)Cl] (<jats:bold>3<\/jats:bold>) was also isolated. The structures of complexes <jats:bold>2.BF4<\/jats:bold> and <jats:bold>3.H2O<\/jats:bold> were determined by X\u2010ray diffraction. Complex <jats:bold>1.BF4<\/jats:bold> underwent a partial reversible\u2010aquation process in water. UV\/Vis and NMR spectroscopic measurements showed that the reaction was hindered by the addition of NaCl and was pH\u2010controlled in acidic solution. At pH\u20057.0 (sodium cacodylate) Ru\u2013Cl complex <jats:bold>1.BF4<\/jats:bold> was the only species present in solution, even at low ionic strength. However, in alkaline medium (KOH), complex <jats:bold>1.BF4<\/jats:bold> underwent basic hydrolysis to afford a Ru\u2013OH complex (<jats:bold>5<\/jats:bold>). Fluorimetric studies revealed that the interaction of complex <jats:bold>1.BF4<\/jats:bold> with DNA was not straightforward; instead, its main features were closely linked to ionic strength and to the [DNA]\/complex ratio. The bifunctional complex <jats:bold>1.BF4<\/jats:bold> was capable of interacting concurrently through both its <jats:italic>p<\/jats:italic>\u2010cymene and 2\u2010pydaT groups.
