The functionalization can be achieved starting from a hydroxyl\u2010functionalized ligand precursor followed by transmetallation of the corresponding Ag complex or <jats:italic>via<\/jats:italic> esterification of the hydroxyl\u2010functionalized gold complex. The compounds are characterized by NMR\u2010spectroscopy, ESI\u2010MS, elemental analysis and SC\u2010XRD. The mono\u2010ester Au complex shows quantum yields around 18%. In contrast, the corresponding <jats:italic>syn<\/jats:italic>\u2010di\u2010ester Au complex, exhibits significantly lower quantum yields of around 8%. Due to insufficient water solubility of the di\u2010ester, only the mono\u2010ester complex has been tested regarding its antiproliferative activity against HeLa\u2010 (cervix) and MCF\u20107\u2010 (breast) cancer cell lines and a healthy fibroblast cell line (V79). IC<jats:sub>50<\/jats:sub> values of 7.26\u2005\u03bcM in the HeLa cell line and 7.92\u2005\u03bcM in the MCF\u20107\u2005cell line along with selectivity indices of 8.8 (HeLa) and 8.0 (MCF\u20107) are obtained.
