Single fibre electromyographic studies and anal reflex latencies were abnormal, indicating damage to the innervation of the pelvic floor musculature, in all the patients with faecal incontinence, with or without rectal prolapse. These studies were normal in 7 of the 8 patients in whom rectal prolapse occurred without incontinence. These investigations imply that denervation of the sphincter musculature can be recognized by electrophysiological tests in most patients with primary faecal incontinence and that the pathogenesis of rectal prolapse differed in the two groups of patients.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1002\/bjs.1800680804","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2007,3,2]],"date-time":"2007-03-02T21:19:04Z","timestamp":1172870344000},"page":"531-536","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":282,"title":["Physiological studies of the anal sphincter musculature in faecal incontinence and rectal prolapse"],"prefix":"10.1093","volume":"68","author":[{"given":"Mischel E","family":"Neill","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Surgical Research Department, St Mark's Hospital , London"}]},{"given":"Alan G","family":"Parks","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Surgical Research Department, St Mark's Hospital , London"}]},{"given":"Michael","family":"Swash","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Surgical Research Department, St Mark's Hospital , London"}]}],"member":"286","published-online":{"date-parts":[[1981,8,1]]},"reference":[{"key":"2024092713135013900_bib1","doi-asserted-by":"crossref","first-page":"656","DOI":"10.1136\/gut.18.8.656","article-title":"Sphincter denervation in ano-rectal incontinence and rectal prolapse","volume":"18","author":"Parks","year":"1977","journal-title":"Gut"},{"key":"2024092713135013900_bib2","doi-asserted-by":"crossref","first-page":"111","DOI":"10.1016\/0022-510X(79)90156-4","article-title":"Pathogenesis of anorectal incontinence: a histometric study of the anal canal musculature","volume":"42","author":"Beersiek","year":"1979","journal-title":"J.
