Using liquid chromatography with diode array and electrospray ionization\/mass spectrometry analysis, their polyphenolic profile was established for the first time. Fifty\u2010six compounds were identified with 5\u2010<jats:italic>O<\/jats:italic>\u2010caffeoylquinic acid, quercetin\u2010<jats:italic>O<\/jats:italic>\u2010(malonyl)hexoside, luteolin diacetyl, and quercetin\u2010<jats:italic>O<\/jats:italic>\u2010hexoside being the major constituents in the leaves of both plant species (\u2265\u00a00.76\u00a0mg\/g of dry extract). Principal component analysis provided a suitable tool to differentiate targeted plants. Naringenin\u20106,8\u2010di\u2010<jats:italic>C<\/jats:italic>\u2010glucoside, quercetin 3\u2010<jats:italic>O<\/jats:italic>\u2010pentosylhexoside, and 1,5\u2010<jats:italic>O<\/jats:italic>\u2010dicaffeoylquinic acid can be used as discriminatory taxonomic\/geographical markers for <jats:italic>M<\/jats:italic>.\u00a0<jats:italic>edulis<\/jats:italic> subspecies from Madeira and Porto Santo populations. This methodology of using polyphenols as chemotaxonomic markers proved to be useful for identification of plant species since the results are consistent with previous taxonomical data.
