About 80\u2009% of the enzyme\u2010bound intermediate <jats:sc>d\u2010<\/jats:sc>luciferyl adenylate (<jats:sc>d\u2010<\/jats:sc>LH<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>\u2010AMP) is oxidized into oxyluciferin, and a photon is emitted during this reaction. The enzyme pathway responsible for the generation of H<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>O<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub> is a side reaction in which <jats:sc>d\u2010<\/jats:sc>LH<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>\u2010AMP is oxidized into dehydroluciferyl adenylate (<jats:sc>L\u2010AMP<\/jats:sc>). Like the bioluminescence reaction, the luciferase\u2010catalyzed synthesis of H<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>O<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub> and <jats:sc>L\u2010AMP<\/jats:sc> is a stereospecific process, involving only the natural <jats:sc>D<\/jats:sc> enantiomer.
