In the case of <jats:bold>L<\/jats:bold><jats:sup><jats:bold>2<\/jats:bold><\/jats:sup>\u2013<jats:bold>L<\/jats:bold><jats:sup><jats:bold>4<\/jats:bold><\/jats:sup>, the evaluation of their coordination capability towards the fac\u2010[Re(CO)<jats:sub>3<\/jats:sub>]<jats:sup>+<\/jats:sup> core led to the synthesis of the organometallic complexes fac\u2010[Re(CO)<jats:sub>3<\/jats:sub>{3,5\u2010Me<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>pz(CH<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>)<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>NH(CH<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>)<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>NHCH<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>\u20109\u2010anthryl}]Br (<jats:bold>7<\/jats:bold>) and fac\u2010[Re(CO)<jats:sub>3<\/jats:sub>{4\u2010(9\u2010anthrylmethyl)pz*(CH<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>)<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>NH(CH<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>)<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>NH<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>}]Br (pz*=pz (<jats:bold>8<\/jats:bold>), 3,5\u2010Me<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>pz (<jats:bold>9<\/jats:bold>)). The interaction of the novel pyrazole\u2013diamine ligands and the rhenium(I) complexes with calf thymus (CT) DNA has been investigated with a variety of spectroscopic techniques (UV\u2010visible, fluorescence, circular dichroism (CD) and linear dichroism (LD)). All of the evaluated compounds have a moderate affinity to CT DNA (3.46\u00d710<jats:sup>3<\/jats:sup>&lt;<jats:italic>K<\/jats:italic><jats:sub>b<\/jats:sub>&lt;1.95\u00d710<jats:sup>4<\/jats:sup>), but the binding mode depends on the position of the chromophore in the framework of the pyrazolyl\u2013diamine ligands. LD measurements have shown that <jats:bold>L<\/jats:bold><jats:sup><jats:bold>1<\/jats:bold><\/jats:sup> and <jats:bold>L<\/jats:bold><jats:sup><jats:bold>2<\/jats:bold><\/jats:sup> act as DNA intercalators, but complex <jats:bold>7<\/jats:bold> intercalates only partially. By contrast, the compounds with the anthracenyl group at the 4\u2010position of the azolyl ring (<jats:bold>L<\/jats:bold><jats:sup><jats:bold>3<\/jats:bold><\/jats:sup>, <jats:bold>L<\/jats:bold><jats:sup><jats:bold>4<\/jats:bold><\/jats:sup> and <jats:bold>9<\/jats:bold>) do not intercalate, and behave more like DNA groove binders.
