The molecular structure of the complex was preserved under the photoreaction owing to the strong Au<jats:sup>I<\/jats:sup>\u2212S bond. The Au<jats:sup>I<\/jats:sup> complex played a determinant role in the photogeneration of H<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub> by accepting the photoinduced electrons originated in TiO<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub> upon light exposure. This is the first example of a Au<jats:sup>I<\/jats:sup> complex semiconductor hybrid photocatalyst. The rate of H<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub> generation under dynamic conditions from water\/ethanol is approximately one order of magnitude superior on a metal basis to that obtained over conventional TiO<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub> decorated with Au metal
