For a frame of reference, a brief look at the history of catalysis in Portugal and the development of catalysis research is also described. Catalysis plays a pivotal role in contemporary organic and organometallic synthesis, which are of relevance to both academic and industrial chemists alike. To celebrate the scope and depth of Portuguese catalysis we, the Guest Editors, Armando Pombeiro and Anthony Burke, are publishing a Virtual Collection of articles in collaboration with <jats:italic>ChemCatChem<\/jats:italic>.
