Three different catalysts containing Ni, Co and Zn phases on an Al\u2010rich amorphous support were synthesized and characterised. The catalytic performances were evaluated in a batch stirred reactor using 2\u2010propanol as a solvent and hydrogen donor, with Co<jats:sub>3<\/jats:sub>O<jats:sub>4<\/jats:sub>\u2212Al<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>O<jats:sub>3<\/jats:sub> showing the highest activity and selectivity to FA (74\u2009% yield; 97\u2009% selectivity). The effects of temperature (T=120\u2013180\u2009\u00b0C) and reaction time (t=30\u2005min\u201324\u2005h) were also studied, reaching a FA maximum yield of 92\u2009% at 150\u2009\u00b0C after 24\u2005h. The Co<jats:sub>3<\/jats:sub>O<jats:sub>4<\/jats:sub>\u2212Al<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>O<jats:sub>3<\/jats:sub> catalyst showed a loss of activity after the first run, which can be easily restored by a simple calcination treatment.
