Here, we compare the electrochemical performance of Nb\n                    <jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>\n                    O\n                    <jats:sub>5<\/jats:sub>\n                    \u2010rGO and amorphous carbon\u2010coated\u2010Nb\n                    <jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>\n                    O\n                    <jats:sub>5<\/jats:sub>\n                    composites, synthesized in similar conditions. The composite made of Nb\n                    <jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>\n                    O\n                    <jats:sub>5<\/jats:sub>\n                    and amorphous carbon (using 1,3,5\u2010triphenylbenzene as carbon source) outperforms the Nb\n                    <jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>\n                    O\n                    <jats:sub>5<\/jats:sub>\n                    \u2010rGO counterpart as a high rate anode electrode material in Li\u2010ion and Na\u2010ion half\u2010cells and hybrid supercapacitors, delivering specific capacities of 134\u2005mAh\u2009g\n                    <jats:sup>\u22121<\/jats:sup>\n                    at 25\u2005C against 98\u2005mAh\u2009g\n                    <jats:sup>\u22121<\/jats:sup>\n                    for the rGO\u2010based composite (in Li electrolyte) and 125\u2005mAh\u2009g\n                    <jats:sup>\u22121<\/jats:sup>\n                    at 20\u2005C against 98\u2005mAh\u2009g\n                    <jats:sup>\u22121<\/jats:sup>\n                    (in Na electrolyte). The organic molecules, which are the precursor of the amorphous carbon, control the size and coat the metal oxide particles more efficiently, leading to more extensive carbon\u2010oxide contacts, which benefits the energy\u2010storage performance.\n
