The resulting compound is a heteroditopic cage (btpN<jats:sub>7<\/jats:sub>) in which one of the head units is appropriate for the coordination of copper(II), whereas the other head is available for additional hydrogen\u2010bonding and electrostatic interactions with substrates. The acid\u2013base behaviour of the new compound, the stability constants of its complex with the Cu<jats:sup>2+<\/jats:sup> ion and the association constants of the copper(II) cryptate with oxalate (oxa<jats:sup>2\u2212<\/jats:sup>), malonate (mal<jats:sup>2\u2212<\/jats:sup>), succinate (suc<jats:sup>2\u2212<\/jats:sup>), maleate (male<jats:sup>2\u2212<\/jats:sup>) and fumarate (fum<jats:sup>2\u2212<\/jats:sup>) were determined by potentiometry at 298.2\u2005K in aqueous solution and at an ionic strength of 0.10\u2005mol\u2009dm<jats:sup>\u22123<\/jats:sup> in KNO<jats:sub>3<\/jats:sub>. These studies revealed a clear preference of the receptor [CuH<jats:sub><jats:italic>h<\/jats:italic><\/jats:sub>btpN<jats:sub>7<\/jats:sub>H<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>O]<jats:sup>(2+<jats:italic>h<\/jats:italic>)+<\/jats:sup> for oxa<jats:sup>2\u2212<\/jats:sup> over the other dicarboxylate substrates. This arises from co\u2010operativity between metal\u2013anion coordination and electrostatic and hydrogen\u2010bonding interactions, in accordance with the ideal size of this dicarboxylate, which allow it to take full advantage of the potential binding sites of the receptor.
