Several intermediates of this reaction were isolated and a pathway was proposed. The deprotonation of <jats:bold>6<\/jats:bold>\u2013<jats:bold>10<\/jats:bold> with NaOH allows their transformation to the corresponding neutral triazapentadienates [Cu{<jats:italic>N<\/jats:italic>H\uf8feC(OR)NC(NH<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>)\uf8fe<jats:italic>N<\/jats:italic>H}<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>] <jats:bold>11<\/jats:bold>\u2013<jats:bold>15<\/jats:bold>. Reaction of <jats:bold>11<\/jats:bold>, <jats:bold>12<\/jats:bold> or <jats:bold>15<\/jats:bold> with acetyl acetone (MeC(\uf8feO)CH<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>C(\uf8feO)Me) leads to liberation of the corresponding pyrimidines <jats:styled-content>NC(Me)CHC(Me)NC<\/jats:styled-content>NHC(\uf8feNH)OR, whereas the same treatment of the cationic complexes <jats:bold>6<\/jats:bold>, <jats:bold>7<\/jats:bold> or <jats:bold>10<\/jats:bold> allows the corresponding metal\u2010free triazapentadiene salts {NH<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>C(OR)\uf8feNC(NH<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>)\uf8feNH<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>}(OAc) to be isolated.
