The orientation of the imidazolium motif with respect to anion binding, and hence the hydrogen bond donor arrangement, was varied in acyclic receptors, interpenetrated assemblies, and the first mono\u2010imidazolium interlocked systems. Their anion recognition properties and co\u2010conformations were studied by solution\u2010phase <jats:sup>1<\/jats:sup>H\u2005NMR investigations, solid\u2010state structures, molecular dynamics simulations, and density functional theory calculations.
