Most mechanistic analyses (atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) vs. single\u2010electron transfer living radical polymerization (SET\u2010LRP)) have been based on model experiments, which cannot correctly mimic the true reaction conditions. We present, for the first time, a determination of the [Cu<jats:sup>I<\/jats:sup>Br]\/[L] (L=nitrogen\u2010based chelating ligand) ratio and the extent of Cu<jats:sup>I<\/jats:sup>Br\/L disproportionation during CLRP of methyl acrylate (MA) in dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) with Cu<jats:sup>0<\/jats:sup> wire as a transition\u2010metal catalyst source. The results suggest that Cu<jats:sup>0<\/jats:sup> acts as a supplemental activator and reducing agent of Cu<jats:sup>II<\/jats:sup>Br<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>\/L to Cu<jats:sup>I<\/jats:sup>Br\/L.
