The best performing dyes feature (a)\u2005visible\u2010light absorption (&gt;400\u2005nm), (b)\u2005high molar absorption coefficients (up to 70000\u2009<jats:sc>m<\/jats:sc><jats:sup>\u22121<\/jats:sup>\u2005cm<jats:sup>\u22121<\/jats:sup>), (c)\u2005Stokes shifts in the range of ca. 2500\u20135800\u2005cm<jats:sup>\u22121<\/jats:sup>, and (d)\u2005strong fluorescence emission with quantum yields of up to 0.74. This yields very bright\u2010emitting dyes for one\u2010photon excitation. However, the most intriguing feature of the dyes is their strong two\u2010photon absorption. This was achieved by means of increased \u03c0\u2010conjugation in the phenylene or phenylene\u2010thiophene bridges through the variation of the conjugation length and rigidity. This provided two\u2010photon absorption cross sections of up to 2800\u2005GM (1 Goeppert\u2010Mayer (GM)=10<jats:sup>\u221250<\/jats:sup>\u2005cm<jats:sup>4<\/jats:sup>\u2009s\u2009photon<jats:sup>\u22121<\/jats:sup>). Considering the mentioned high fluorescence quantum yields, exceptionally bright\u2010emitting A\u2010\u03c0\u2010A two\u2010photon absorbing dyes with low molecular mass are obtained.
