The method of characteristics is used to develop, analytically, the responses of fixed bed (plug flow) adsorber\/reactors to step, pulse or Dirac inputs of reactant <jats:italic>A<\/jats:italic>. An increase in the breakthrough time of the column is observed as a consequence of the coupling of both phenomena.<\/jats:p><jats:p>The responses of CSTR adsorber\/reactors to step or Dirac inputs of reactant <jats:italic>A<\/jats:italic> are derived, as well.
