The general formula [Ln(btfa)<jats:sub>3<\/jats:sub>(4,4\u2032\u2010bpy)(EtOH)] (Ln=Eu, Gd; 4,4\u2032\u2010bpy=4,4\u2032\u2010bipyridine; btfa=4,4,4\u2010trifluoro\u20101\u2010phenyl\u20101,3\u2010butanedione) for the complexes was confirmed by X\u2010ray crystallography and elemental analysis. The ground\u2010state geometry of the Eu<jats:sup>3+<\/jats:sup> complex was calculated from the Sparkle\/AM1 model. The calculated quantum yield obtained from the Sparkle model and from the crystal structure (both 46\u2009%) are in satisfactory agreement with the experimental value (38\u00b14\u2009%). In the isolated complex the most efficient luminescence channel is S<jats:sub>0<\/jats:sub>\u2192S<jats:sub>1<\/jats:sub>\u2192T\u2192(<jats:sup>5<\/jats:sup>D<jats:sub>1<\/jats:sub><jats:italic>\u2009, <\/jats:italic><jats:sup>5<\/jats:sup>D<jats:sub>0<\/jats:sub><jats:italic>\u2009<\/jats:italic>)\u2192<jats:sup>7<\/jats:sup>F<jats:sub>0\u20146<\/jats:sub><jats:italic>\u2009<\/jats:italic>, where the exchange mechanism dominates in the energy\u2010transfer channel T\u2192(<jats:sup>5<\/jats:sup>D<jats:sub>1<\/jats:sub>, <jats:sup>5<\/jats:sup>D<jats:sub>0<\/jats:sub>). For the Eu<jats:sup>3+<\/jats:sup>\u2010based di\u2010ureasils a 50% quantum yield enhancement compared to the Eu<jats:sup>3+<\/jats:sup> complex is observed, which suggests an effective hybrid host\u2013metal ion interaction and an active energy\u2010transfer channel between the hybrid host and the Eu<jats:sup>3+<\/jats:sup> complex.
