This reaction represents the first example of the selective nucleophilic addition of pyridinium azomethine ylides to the nitrile group and the first example of new C\uf8ffC bond formation in the reaction of nitrilium derivatives of boron clusters with any nucleophiles so far tested. Compounds\u2005<jats:bold>4\u2009a<\/jats:bold>\u2013<jats:bold>h<\/jats:bold>,<jats:bold>k<\/jats:bold>\u2013<jats:bold>n<\/jats:bold> were characterized by ICP\u2010MS, high resolution ESI\u2010MS, molar conductivity, and IR, <jats:sup>1<\/jats:sup>H, <jats:sup>13<\/jats:sup>C{<jats:sup>1<\/jats:sup>H}, and <jats:sup>11<\/jats:sup>B{<jats:sup>1<\/jats:sup>H} NMR spectroscopy. The structures of <jats:bold>4\u2009a<\/jats:bold> and <jats:bold>4\u2009b<\/jats:bold> were determined by a single\u2010crystal X\u2010ray analysis. Theoretical calculations at the DFT level allowed the interpretation of the observed reaction selectivity, which is driven mostly by thermodynamic rather than kinetic factors, and steric repulsion between the boron cluster and the azomethine ylide molecule plays a crucial role. The activation of the nitrile group upon binding to the boron cluster is explained in terms of the electrostatic arguments.
