Strong changes in the ground and excited state were detected only in the case of the soft metal ions Zn<jats:sup>2+<\/jats:sup>, Cd<jats:sup>2+<\/jats:sup>, Hg<jats:sup>2+<\/jats:sup>, and Cu<jats:sup>2+<\/jats:sup>. A one metal per ligand molar ratio was obtained in all cases for compounds\u2005<jats:bold>1<\/jats:bold>\u2013<jats:bold>5<\/jats:bold>. In addition, a remarkable increase of the emission intensity for <jats:bold>1<\/jats:bold>\u2013<jats:bold>5<\/jats:bold> was observed in the presence of Hg<jats:sup>2+<\/jats:sup>. In this series the highest association constant was obtained for compound\u2005<jats:bold>1<\/jats:bold> (log\u2009<jats:italic>K<\/jats:italic><jats:sub>ass<\/jats:sub>=(8.71\u00b14.81)\u00d710<jats:sup>\u22123<\/jats:sup>), which was able to quantify 32\u2005ppb of Hg<jats:sup>2+<\/jats:sup>. For compounds\u2005<jats:bold>6<\/jats:bold>\u2013<jats:bold>10<\/jats:bold> containing an additional pyridine unit, a metal\u2010to\u2010ligand stoichiometry of 1:2 was determined. The gas\u2010phase detection abilities of compounds\u2005<jats:bold>1<\/jats:bold>\u2013<jats:bold>10<\/jats:bold> using MALDI\u2010TOF\u2010MS spectrometry confirmed that their sensorial ability and theoretical calculations are in accordance with the stoichiometry observed.
