In the case of the bistriflimide\u2010based bis(bipyridinium) salts, two room\u2010temperature ionic liquids (RTILs) with a combination of linkers and terminal ethers, [(C<jats:sub>3<\/jats:sub>O)bpy(C<jats:sub>4<\/jats:sub>O)bpy(C<jats:sub>3<\/jats:sub>O)][NTf<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>]<jats:sub>4<\/jats:sub> and [(C<jats:sub>10<\/jats:sub>)bpy(C<jats:sub>4<\/jats:sub>O)bpy(C<jats:sub>3<\/jats:sub>O)][NTf<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>]<jats:sub>4<\/jats:sub>, were obtained, with glass transition temperatures (between \u22126.9 and 6.0\u2009\u00b0C) higher than those reported previously for salts of dication bipyridinium scaffolds (\u221217.5 to \u221230.0\u2009\u00b0C). The prepared salt containing [(C<jats:sub>10<\/jats:sub>)bpy(C<jats:sub>4<\/jats:sub>O)bpy(C<jats:sub>10<\/jats:sub>)][NTf<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>] can form an ionic liquid crystal structure. The most promising salts were tested as efficient and reversible multicolored electrochromic devices through cyclic voltammetry studies and detailed characterizations of their electrochromic performances. In general, tetracations based on oxobis(bipyridinium) salts show higher chromatic contrast and lower coloration efficiency than similar dication salts. Exchange of the anion from iodide to [NTf<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>] increases the transition times and coloration efficiencies for all the prepared di\u2010 and tetracation salts.
