The addition of small amounts of the readily available sodium dithionite has a remarkable effect on promoting the stability of 5\u2010HMF and inhibiting side reactions, thus helping to circumvent such limitations. The addition of sodium dithionite led to improvements in thermal stability (120\u2009\u00b0C, 4\u2005h, neat; 100\u2009% vs. 37\u2009%), under distillation (yield: 85\u2009% vs. 52\u2009%), and in a wide range of reactions, including 5\u2010HMF synthesis under biphasic conditions (yield: 98\u2009% vs. 67\u2009%; purity: 92\u2009% vs. 83\u2009%) and 5\u2010HMF transformations, such as Knoevenagel condensation with Meldrum's acid (yield: 96\u2009% vs. 74\u2009%), Cannizaro reaction (yield: quantitative vs. 83\u2009%), and condensation with primary diamines to give pyridinium salts (yield: 88\u2009% vs. 60\u2009%).<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1002\/cssc.201800297","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2018,4,2]],"date-time":"2018-04-02T15:53:32Z","timestamp":1522684412000},"page":"1612-1616","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1002\/crossmark_policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":60,"title":["Going Beyond the Limits of the Biorenewable Platform: Sodium Dithionite\u2010Promoted Stabilization of 5\u2010Hydroxymethylfurfural"],"prefix":"10.1002","volume":"11","author":[{"given":"Rafael F.
