Yet, their dependency on visible light limits the cell\u2010density, which is a challenge for the scale\u2010up. Here, it was shown with the example of a light\u2010dependent biotransformation that internal illumination in a bubble column reactor equipped with wireless light emitters (WLEs) could overcome this limitation. Cells of the cyanobacterium <jats:italic>Synechocystis<\/jats:italic> sp. PCC 6803 expressing the gene of the ene\u2010reductase YqjM were used for the reduction of 2\u2010methylmaleimide to (<jats:italic>R<\/jats:italic>)\u20102\u2010methylsuccinimide with high optical purity (&gt;99\u2009% <jats:italic>ee<\/jats:italic>). Compared to external source of light, illumination by floating wireless light emitters allowed a more than two\u2010fold rate increase. Under optimized conditions, product formation rates up to 3.7\u2005m<jats:sc>m<\/jats:sc>\u2009h<jats:sup>\u22121<\/jats:sup> and specific activities of up to 65.5\u2005U\u2009g<jats:sub>DCW<\/jats:sub><jats:sup>\u22121<\/jats:sup> were obtained, allowing the reduction of 40\u2005m<jats:sc>m<\/jats:sc> 2\u2010methylmaleimide with 650\u2005mg isolated enantiopure product (73\u2009% yield).
