The process uses oxygen as a sole oxidant to achieve the formation of glyoxals, which are efficiently converted <jats:italic>in\u2005situ<\/jats:italic> to important <jats:italic>\u03b1<\/jats:italic>\u2010hydroxyesters. The mechanistic insights are provided by isotopic labeling and supported by DFT calculations.
