The complexation behaviour of this ligand towards Cu<jats:sup>II<\/jats:sup> and Fe<jats:sup>III<\/jats:sup> in aqueous solution has been studied by potentiometry, UV\/Vis and EPR spectroscopy and magnetic moment measurements. The Cu<jats:sup>II<\/jats:sup> complexation involves the formation of a mononuclear species with a tetradentate mixed amine\/hydroxamate coordination mode, whereas the Fe<jats:sup>III<\/jats:sup> complexation involves a binuclear species with Fe<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>L<jats:sub>3<\/jats:sub> stoichiometry and normal {<jats:italic>O<\/jats:italic>,<jats:italic>O<\/jats:italic>}\u2010hydroxamate coordination mode.
