{"status":"ok","message-type":"work","message-version":"1.0.0","message":{"indexed":{"date-parts":[[2026,3,8]],"date-time":"2026-03-08T20:36:28Z","timestamp":1773002188908,"version":"3.50.1"},"reference-count":72,"publisher":"Wiley","issue":"21","license":[{"start":{"date-parts":[[2003,10,28]],"date-time":"2003-10-28T00:00:00Z","timestamp":1067299200000},"content-version":"vor","delay-in-days":0,"URL":"http:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/termsAndConditions#vor"}],"content-domain":{"domain":["chemistry-europe.onlinelibrary.wiley.com"],"crossmark-restriction":true},"short-container-title":["Eur J Inorg Chem"],"published-print":{"date-parts":[[2003,11]]},"abstract":"<jats:title>Abstract<\/jats:title><jats:p>In order to investigate the non\u2010linear optical properties, in particular second\u2010order effects of binuclear organometallic complexes, a series of new cationic binuclear [MCp(DPPE)N\u2261C\u2212(spacer)\u2212C\u2261C\u2212C<jats:sub>6<\/jats:sub>H<jats:sub>5<\/jats:sub>Cr(CO)<jats:sub>3<\/jats:sub>]<jats:sup>+<\/jats:sup>[PF<jats:sub>6<\/jats:sub>]<jats:sup>\u2212<\/jats:sup> compounds and mononuclear precursors [N\u2261C\u2212(spacer)\u2212C\u2261 C\u2212C<jats:sub>6<\/jats:sub>H<jats:sub>5<\/jats:sub>Cr(CO)<jats:sub>3<\/jats:sub>] have been synthesised [where M = Fe<jats:sup>II<\/jats:sup> or Ru<jats:sup>II<\/jats:sup>; Cp = \u03b7<jats:sup>5<\/jats:sup>\u2010C<jats:sub>5<\/jats:sub>H<jats:sub>5<\/jats:sub> and spacer = phenyl ring (C<jats:sub>6<\/jats:sub>H<jats:sub>4<\/jats:sub>), thiophene, (C<jats:sub>4<\/jats:sub>H<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>S), or bithiophene (C<jats:sub>4<\/jats:sub>H<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>S)<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>]. The Fe or Ru organometallic \u03c0\u2010donor fragments were linked by an extended \u03c0 system to the acceptor Cr(CO)<jats:sub>3<\/jats:sub> fragment. The effect of \u03c0 back\u2010donation involving the second Fe or Ru metal centre and the \u03c0* orbitals of the N\u2261C\u2010coordinated group, was probed by the \u03bd<jats:sub>(N\u2261C)<\/jats:sub> stretching bands on the IR spectra and also by NMR spectroscopic data. The planarity, largely due to the \u03c0\u2010electron resonance, found on the solid state structure of the mononuclear complex [N\u2261C\u2212C<jats:sub>6<\/jats:sub>H<jats:sub>5<\/jats:sub>\u2212C\u2261C\u2212(\u03b7<jats:sup>6<\/jats:sup>\u2010C<jats:sub>6<\/jats:sub>H<jats:sub>5<\/jats:sub>)Cr(CO)<jats:sub>3<\/jats:sub>] (<jats:bold>1Cr<\/jats:bold>) determined by X\u2010ray diffraction [monoclinic system, <jats:italic>P<\/jats:italic>2<jats:sub>1<\/jats:sub>\/<jats:italic>c<\/jats:italic> space group, with <jats:italic>a<\/jats:italic> = 10.326(2) \u00c5, <jats:italic>b<\/jats:italic> = 13.209(5) \u00c5, <jats:italic>c<\/jats:italic> = 11.799(2) \u00c5 and <jats:italic>Z<\/jats:italic> = 4] emphasises the electronic effect of this building block. The significant values of first hyperpolarisability \u03b2 determined by hyper\u2010Rayleigh scattering (HRS) indicate that the Fe containing compounds were more efficient on second\u2010order non\u2010linear optical properties than the ruthenium analogues and the parent mononuclear chromium compounds.
