From the spectra obtained, truncated crystal field (CF) splitting patterns of these compounds could be derived, and simulated by fitting the parameters of a phenomenological Hamiltonian. On the basis of the CF parameters used, the global CF strengths experienced by the Sm<jats:sup>3+<\/jats:sup> central ions of complexes <jats:bold>1<\/jats:bold>\u2212<jats:bold>5<\/jats:bold>, as well as the individual CF strength associated with one C<jats:sub>5<\/jats:sub>H<jats:sub>4<\/jats:sub><jats:italic>t<\/jats:italic>Bu<jats:sup>\u2212<\/jats:sup> ligand are estimated. The obtained Slater parameters F<jats:sup>2<\/jats:sup> and the spin\u2010orbit coupling parameters \u03b6<jats:sub>4f<\/jats:sub> allow the insertion of compounds <jats:bold>1<\/jats:bold>\u2212<jats:bold>5<\/jats:bold> into truncated nephelauxetic and relativistic nephelauxetic series. Besides, the experimentally based non\u2010relativistic and relativistic molecular orbital schemes (in the f range) of complexes <jats:bold>1<\/jats:bold> and, partly,  <jats:bold>3<\/jats:bold> are set up and compared with the results of quantum chemical model calculations.
