The crystal structures, obtained by the displacement of the coordinated water molecules in [Co<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>V<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>O<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>(pmida)<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>(H<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>O)<jats:sub>10<\/jats:sub>]\u00b72(H<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>O) (<jats:bold>1<\/jats:bold>) [<jats:italic>P<\/jats:italic>2<jats:sub>1<\/jats:sub>\/<jats:italic>c<\/jats:italic> monoclinic space group, <jats:italic>Z<\/jats:italic> = 2, <jats:italic>a<\/jats:italic> = 9.996(2)\u00a0\u00c5, <jats:italic>b<\/jats:italic> = 14.854(3)\u00a0\u00c5, <jats:italic>c<\/jats:italic> = 10.781(2)\u00a0\u00c5, <jats:italic>\u03b2<\/jats:italic>\u00a0=\u00a0110.90(3)\u00b0 and <jats:italic>V<\/jats:italic> = 1495.5(5)\u00a0\u00c5<jats:sup>3<\/jats:sup>] by the rod\u2010like bridging 4,4\u2032\u2010bipyridine (4,4\u2032\u2010bpy) ligand \u2014 [CdVO(pmida)(4,4\u2032\u2010bpy)(H<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>O)<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>]\u00b7(4,4\u2032\u2010bpy)<jats:sub>0.5<\/jats:sub>\u00b7H<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>O (<jats:bold>2<\/jats:bold>) and [CoVO(pmida)(4,4\u2032\u2010bpy)(H<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>O)<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>]\u00b7(4,4\u2032\u2010bpy)<jats:sub>0.5<\/jats:sub> (<jats:bold>3<\/jats:bold>) \u2014 are isostructural and were also determined in the <jats:italic>P<\/jats:italic>2<jats:sub>1<\/jats:sub>\/<jats:italic>c<\/jats:italic> monoclinic space group (<jats:italic>Z<\/jats:italic>\u00a0=\u00a04) by single\u2010crystal X\u2010ray diffraction studies at low temperature (180\u00a0K): for <jats:bold>2<\/jats:bold>, <jats:italic>a<\/jats:italic> = 9.1267(18)\u00a0\u00c5, <jats:italic>b<\/jats:italic> = 17.610(4)\u00a0\u00c5, <jats:italic>c<\/jats:italic> = 15.361(3)\u00a0\u00c5, <jats:italic>\u03b2<\/jats:italic>\u00a0=\u00a093.06(3)\u00b0 and <jats:italic>V<\/jats:italic> = 2465.3(9)\u00a0\u00c5<jats:sup>3<\/jats:sup>; for <jats:bold>3<\/jats:bold>, <jats:italic>a<\/jats:italic> = 8.7734(18)\u00a0\u00c5, <jats:italic>b<\/jats:italic> = 17.264(4)\u00a0\u00c5, <jats:italic>c<\/jats:italic> = 15.507(3)\u00a0\u00c5, <jats:italic>\u03b2<\/jats:italic>\u00a0=\u00a093.94(3)\u00b0 and <jats:italic>V<\/jats:italic> = 2343.2(8)\u00a0\u00c5<jats:sup>3<\/jats:sup>. All the crystal structures contain centrosymmetric dimeric [V<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>O<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>(pmida)<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>]<jats:sup>4\u2212<\/jats:sup> units connected to neighbouring M<jats:sup>2+<\/jats:sup> cations (Cd<jats:sup>2+<\/jats:sup> for <jats:bold>2<\/jats:bold>, and Co<jats:sup>2+<\/jats:sup> for <jats:bold>1<\/jats:bold> and <jats:bold>3<\/jats:bold>) through the phosphonate group. In <jats:bold>2<\/jats:bold> and <jats:bold>3<\/jats:bold>, extended two\u2010dimensional [MVO(pmida)(H<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>O)<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>]<jats:sub><jats:italic>n<\/jats:italic><\/jats:sub> layers are formed, with the 4,4\u2032\u2010bpy molecules acting as pillars between adjacent layers, leading to porous 3D supramolecular structures, [MVO(pmida)(4,4\u2032\u2010bpy)(H<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>O)<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>]<jats:sub>\u221e<\/jats:sub>, with a topology resembling that of the NbO net.
