When an excess of free carbene is used, the dicationic species [ReOCl(<jats:italic>i<\/jats:italic>Pr\u2010carbene)<jats:sub>4<\/jats:sub>][Cl]<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub> (<jats:bold>2<\/jats:bold>) is isolated. The cationic dioxorhenium complex [ReO<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>(<jats:italic>i<\/jats:italic>Pr\u2010carbene)<jats:sub>4<\/jats:sub>]<jats:sup>+<\/jats:sup> has been isolated as its I<jats:sup>\u2212<\/jats:sup> (<jats:bold>3<\/jats:bold>) and ReO<jats:sub>4<\/jats:sub><jats:sup>\u2212<\/jats:sup> (<jats:bold>4<\/jats:bold>) salts by different reactions. Treatment of [ReO<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>I(PPh<jats:sub>3<\/jats:sub>)<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>] with an excess of 1,3\u2010diisopropylimidazol\u20102\u2010ylidene yields compound <jats:bold>3<\/jats:bold> in quantitative yield. The cationic species is also isolated as an ReO<jats:sub>4<\/jats:sub><jats:sup>\u2212<\/jats:sup> salt from the reaction of [ReO<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>Me(PhCCPh)] with 1,3\u2010diisopropylimidazol\u20102\u2010ylidene. The molecular structures of [ReOCl<jats:sub>3<\/jats:sub>(<jats:italic>i<\/jats:italic>Pr\u2010carbene)<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>] (<jats:bold>1<\/jats:bold>) and [ReO<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>(<jats:italic>i<\/jats:italic>Pr\u2010carbene)<jats:sub>4<\/jats:sub>][ReO<jats:sub>4<\/jats:sub>] (<jats:bold>4<\/jats:bold>) have been determined by single\u2010crystal X\u2010ray diffraction.
