The water\u2010soluble ligands (SO<jats:sub>3<\/jats:sub>\u2010sal)<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>en and R(SO<jats:sub>3<\/jats:sub>\u2010sal)<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>en (SO<jats:sub>3<\/jats:sub>\u2010sal = salicylaldehyde\u20105\u2010sulphonate) have been studied by pH potentiometry and <jats:sup>1<\/jats:sup>H NMR spectroscopy and the protonation constants of R(SO<jats:sub>3<\/jats:sub>\u2010sal)<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>en have been determined. The Schiff bases are more susceptible to hydrolysis than the corresponding reduced Schiff bases. The crystal structures of H<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>(<jats:italic>o<\/jats:italic>\u2010van)<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>en and KH(<jats:italic>o<\/jats:italic>\u2010van)<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>en (<jats:italic>o<\/jats:italic>\u2010van = <jats:italic>o<\/jats:italic>\u2010vanillin) have been determined by X\u2010ray diffraction. The vanadium(<jats:sc>IV<\/jats:sc>) complexes have been prepared and characterised by magnetic measurements and IR, UV\/Vis and EPR spectroscopy. The colours, magnetic susceptibilities and IR spectra of the new vanadium(<jats:sc>IV<\/jats:sc>) complexes of the reduced Schiff bases now obtained suggest oligomeric\/polymeric structures for the compounds while the corresponding V<jats:sup>IV<\/jats:sup>O\u2013Schiff\u2010base complexes are monomeric.The complexation of [V<jats:sup>IV<\/jats:sup>O]<jats:sup>2+<\/jats:sup> and [V<jats:sup>V<\/jats:sup>O<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>]<jats:sup>+<\/jats:sup> with R(SO<jats:sub>3<\/jats:sub>\u2010sal)<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>enin aqueous solution has been studied by pH potentiometry, UV\/Vis as well as by EPR spectroscopy for the V<jats:sup>IV<\/jats:sup>O system and <jats:sup>1<\/jats:sup>H and <jats:sup>51<\/jats:sup>V NMR spectroscopy for the V<jats:sup>V<\/jats:sup>O<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub> system. Complex formation constants have been determined and binding modes have been proposed. <jats:italic>N<\/jats:italic>,<jats:italic>N<\/jats:italic><jats:italic>\u2032<\/jats:italic>\u2010ethylenebis(pyridoxylaminato) (Rpyr<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>en) has also been obtained and the structure of Na[V<jats:sup>V<\/jats:sup>O<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>(Rpyr<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>en)]<jats:bold>\u00b7<\/jats:bold>CH<jats:sub>3<\/jats:sub>OH<jats:bold>\u00b7<\/jats:bold>3H<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>O determined by X\u2010ray diffraction. The Rpyr<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>en<jats:sup>2\u2013<\/jats:sup> ligand coordinates through both the <jats:italic>N<\/jats:italic>\u2010amine and <jats:italic>O<\/jats:italic>\u2010phenolate moieties in a symmetrical \u03b1\u2010<jats:italic>cis<\/jats:italic> type coordination mode, i.e. with both <jats:italic>O<\/jats:italic>\u2010phenolato donors <jats:italic>cis<\/jats:italic> to the <jats:italic>O<\/jats:italic>\u2010oxo atoms and <jats:italic>trans<\/jats:italic> to each other.
