{"status":"ok","message-type":"work","message-version":"1.0.0","message":{"indexed":{"date-parts":[[2026,1,7]],"date-time":"2026-01-07T22:01:19Z","timestamp":1767823279871,"version":"3.49.0"},"reference-count":70,"publisher":"Wiley","issue":"15","license":[{"start":{"date-parts":[[2005,6,22]],"date-time":"2005-06-22T00:00:00Z","timestamp":1119398400000},"content-version":"vor","delay-in-days":0,"URL":"http:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/termsAndConditions#vor"}],"content-domain":{"domain":["chemistry-europe.onlinelibrary.wiley.com"],"crossmark-restriction":true},"short-container-title":["Eur J Inorg Chem"],"published-print":{"date-parts":[[2005,8]]},"abstract":"<jats:title>Abstract<\/jats:title><jats:p>The reaction between the nitrone <jats:italic>p<\/jats:italic>\u2010MeC<jats:sub>6<\/jats:sub>H<jats:sub>4<\/jats:sub>CH=N(Me)O and <jats:italic>trans<\/jats:italic>\u2010[PdCl<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>(RCN)<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>] (R = Ph, Me) in the corresponding RCN (or of the nitrone in neat RCN in the presence of PdCl<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>) proceeds at 45 \u00b0C (R = Ph) or reflux (R = Me) for 1 d and allows the isolation of the \u0394<jats:sup>4<\/jats:sup>\u20101,2,4\u2010oxadiazoline complexes [PdCl<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>{N<jats:sup><jats:italic>a<\/jats:italic><\/jats:sup>=C(R)ON(Me)C<jats:sup><jats:italic>b<\/jats:italic><\/jats:sup>H(C<jats:sub>6<\/jats:sub>H<jats:sub>4<\/jats:sub>Me\u2010<jats:italic>p<\/jats:italic>)}<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>(N<jats:sup><jats:italic>a<\/jats:italic><\/jats:sup>\u2013C<jats:sup><jats:italic>b<\/jats:italic><\/jats:sup>)] (R = Ph <jats:bold>1<\/jats:bold>; R = Me <jats:bold>2<\/jats:bold>) in ca. 50 and ca. 15\u2009% yields, respectively. The reaction time can be drastically reduced by focused microwave irradiation of the reaction mixture. In CH<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>Cl<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub> or acetone, this reaction proceeds in another direction to achieve the unstable nitrone complex [PdCl<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>{<jats:styled-content>O<\/jats:styled-content>N(Me)=CH(C<jats:sub>6<\/jats:sub>H<jats:sub>4<\/jats:sub>Me\u2010<jats:italic>p<\/jats:italic>)}<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>] (<jats:bold>3<\/jats:bold>), which was characterized by electrospray mass spectrometry, IR and <jats:sup>1<\/jats:sup>H NMR spectroscopy. Complex <jats:bold>3<\/jats:bold> is the first representative of (nitrone)Pd<jats:sup>II<\/jats:sup> compounds and is the key intermediate in at least two further reactions, i.e. cyclopalladation to give the dimeric complex [Pd<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>(\u03bc\u2010Cl)<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>{<jats:styled-content>O<\/jats:styled-content>N(Me)=C(H)<jats:italic>C<\/jats:italic><jats:sub>6<\/jats:sub>H<jats:sub>3<\/jats:sub>Me\u2010<jats:italic>p<\/jats:italic>}<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>] (<jats:bold>5<\/jats:bold>; 30\u2009% isolated yield) and deoxygenation of the nitrone to furnish the imine compound [PdCl<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>{N(Me)=CH(C<jats:sub>6<\/jats:sub>H<jats:sub>4<\/jats:sub>Me\u2010<jats:italic>p<\/jats:italic>)}<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>] (<jats:bold>4<\/jats:bold>). The palladium complexes<jats:bold> 1<\/jats:bold>,<jats:bold> 2<\/jats:bold>,<jats:bold> 4<\/jats:bold> and<jats:bold> 5 <\/jats:bold>were characterized by C, H, and N analyses, FAB\u2010MS, IR, <jats:sup>1<\/jats:sup>H and <jats:sup>13<\/jats:sup>C{<jats:sup>1<\/jats:sup>H} spectroscopy, while <jats:bold>4<\/jats:bold> and <jats:bold>5<\/jats:bold> additionally by X\u2010ray crystallography.
