The structures of <jats:bold>1<\/jats:bold> and <jats:bold>2<\/jats:bold> were determined by single\u2010crystal X\u2010ray diffraction in the orthorhombic <jats:italic>Pbca<\/jats:italic> and triclinic <jats:italic>P<\/jats:italic><jats:styled-content>$\\bar {1}$<jats:inline-graphic xmlns:xlink=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xlink\" xlink:href=\"graphic\/tex2gif-ueqn-1.gif\" xlink:title=\"equation image\"\/><\/jats:styled-content> space groups, respectively. Both complexes have similar metal ion coordination environments, which can be envisaged as slightly distorted pseudo\u2010square pyramids, a coordination geometry commonly compared with a four\u2010legged piano stool. The two complexes were immobilised in native and permethylated \u03b2\u2010cyclodextrins (\u03b2 CD and TRIMEB) by methods tailored according to the stabilities and solubilities of the individual components and this gave four adducts with a 1:1 host\/guest stoichiometry. The formation of true inclusion compounds was supported by powder X\u2010ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), <jats:sup>13<\/jats:sup>C{<jats:sup>1<\/jats:sup>H} CP\/MAS NMR and FTIR spectroscopy. In the case of the TRIMEB adduct containing complex <jats:bold>1<\/jats:bold>, the crystal packing arrangement is markedly similar to that previously reported for the corresponding 1:1 TRIMEB adducts of the neutral guests [CpMoX(CO)<jats:sub>3<\/jats:sub>] (X = Cl, CH<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>CONH<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>), featuring columns in which the macrocycles are arranged along the <jats:italic>b<\/jats:italic> axis in a tilted fashion.(\u00a9 Wiley\u2010VCH Verlag GmbH &amp; Co.
