Compounds <jats:bold>1<\/jats:bold> and <jats:bold>2<\/jats:bold> crystallize in triclinic <jats:italic>P<\/jats:italic><jats:styled-content>$\\bar {1}$<jats:inline-graphic xmlns:xlink=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xlink\" xlink:href=\"graphic\/tex2gif-ueqn-1.gif\" xlink:title=\"equation image\"\/><\/jats:styled-content> and monoclinic <jats:italic>P<\/jats:italic>2<jats:sub>1<\/jats:sub>\/<jats:italic>c<\/jats:italic> systems, respectively. Compound <jats:bold>2<\/jats:bold>, in which the Ni<jats:sub>4<\/jats:sub>O<jats:sub>4<\/jats:sub> cubane core is composed of two \u03bc<jats:sub>3<\/jats:sub>\u2010phenoxido and two \u03bc<jats:sub>3<\/jats:sub>\u2010alkoxido moieties, represents the sole example of this type. The variable\u2010temperature (2\u2013300 K) magnetic susceptibilities and magnetizations of these two compounds were measured. The interaction between the metal centres in dinuclear compound <jats:bold>1<\/jats:bold> is weak ferromagnetic, resulting in an <jats:italic>S<\/jats:italic><jats:sub>T<\/jats:sub> = 2 ground state at 2 K. The overall interaction observed in <jats:bold>2<\/jats:bold> is weak ferromagnetic, leading to an unusual <jats:italic>S<\/jats:italic><jats:sub>T<\/jats:sub> = 3 ground state.
