The title compound crystallizes in the triclinic system (space group <jats:italic>P<\/jats:italic><jats:styled-content>$\\bar {1}$<jats:inline-graphic xmlns:xlink=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xlink\" xlink:href=\"graphic\/tex2gif-ueqn-1.gif\" xlink:title=\"equation image\"\/><\/jats:styled-content>). Electrochemical analyses reveal that compound <jats:bold>1<\/jats:bold> exhibits two\u2010step quasireversible couples in the reduction window with <jats:italic>E<\/jats:italic><jats:sub>1\/2<\/jats:sub> values of \u20131412 and \u20131762 mV. The variable\u2010temperature (2\u2013300 K) magnetic susceptibilities at 1 T of the title compound were measured. The interaction between the metal centres is weak ferromagnetic (<jats:italic>J<\/jats:italic> = 5.0 cm<jats:sup>\u20131<\/jats:sup>, <jats:italic>g<\/jats:italic> = 2.23, <jats:italic>D<\/jats:italic><jats:sub>1<\/jats:sub> = 29.2 cm<jats:sup>\u20131<\/jats:sup> and <jats:italic>D<\/jats:italic><jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub> = 10.7 cm<jats:sup>\u20131<\/jats:sup>). Comparison of the exchange integral of <jats:bold>1<\/jats:bold> with that of the only reported \u03bc\u2010phenoxido\u2013\u03bc<jats:sub>1,1<\/jats:sub>\u2010azide dinickel(II) compound results in the emergence of a unique example of the dependence of strength of magnetic exchange interaction on the metal\u2013ligand bridge distance.
