Treatment of <jats:bold>3a<\/jats:bold> with 2\u2010dimethylaminoethylamine (<jats:bold>4<\/jats:bold>), in refluxing methanol, gives the corresponding <jats:italic>N<jats:sup>2<\/jats:sup>N<jats:sup>2<\/jats:sup><\/jats:italic>\u2010bonded bis[(<jats:italic>E<\/jats:italic>)\u20105\u2010(4\u2010{[2\u2010(dimethylamino)ethylimino]methyl}phenyl)tetrazol\u20102\u2010ate] platinum(II) complex <jats:italic>trans<\/jats:italic>\u2010[Pt{N<jats:sub>4<\/jats:sub>CC<jats:sub>6<\/jats:sub>H<jats:sub>4<\/jats:sub>(4\u2010CH=NCH<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>CH<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>NMe<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>)}<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>(PPh<jats:sub>3<\/jats:sub>)<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>] (<jats:bold>6<\/jats:bold>) in good yield. An alternative route involves the reaction of 4\u2010cyanobenzaldehyde (<jats:bold>2<\/jats:bold>) with diamine <jats:bold>4<\/jats:bold> to give the <jats:italic>E<\/jats:italic> isomer of 4\u2010{[2\u2010(dimethylamino)ethylimino]methyl}benzonitrile N\u2261CC<jats:sub>6<\/jats:sub>H<jats:sub>4<\/jats:sub>(4\u2010CH=NCH<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>CH<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>NMe<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>) (<jats:bold>5<\/jats:bold>), followed by the reaction of the latter with bis(azido)platinum(II) complex <jats:bold>1<\/jats:bold> to afford <jats:bold>6<\/jats:bold> in similar yield. The reaction of <jats:bold>6<\/jats:bold> with MCl<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub> (M = Pd, Ni, Zn, Cu), at room temperature for 3 h regenerates complex <jats:bold>3a<\/jats:bold> as a result of the Schiff base hydrolysis, along with the diamine complex [MCl<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>(NH<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>CH<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>CH<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>NMe<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>)] (<jats:bold>7<\/jats:bold>). Treatment of <jats:bold>6<\/jats:bold> with ZnCl<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub> for 36 h affords a mixture of <jats:bold>3a<\/jats:bold> with its substitution products [Pt{HN<jats:sub>4<\/jats:sub>CC<jats:sub>6<\/jats:sub>H<jats:sub>4<\/jats:sub>(4\u2010CH=O)}(NH<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>CH<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>CH<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>NMe<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>)(PPh<jats:sub>3<\/jats:sub>)]Cl<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub> (<jats:bold>9<\/jats:bold>; isolated in the tetrazole form) and <jats:italic>cis<\/jats:italic>\u2010[PtCl<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>(PPh<jats:sub>3<\/jats:sub>)<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>] (<jats:bold>10<\/jats:bold>) and diamine complex <jats:bold>7<\/jats:bold> (M = Zn). The [2+3] cycloaddition reactions of <jats:italic>cis<\/jats:italic>\u2010[Pt(N<jats:sub>3<\/jats:sub>)<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>(PPh<jats:sub>3<\/jats:sub>)<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>] (<jats:bold>1<\/jats:bold>) with unsubstituted dicyanobenzenes <jats:bold>11<\/jats:bold> [1,2\u2010C<jats:sub>6<\/jats:sub>H<jats:sub>4<\/jats:sub>(CN)<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub> (<jats:bold>11a<\/jats:bold>), 1,3\u2010C<jats:sub>6<\/jats:sub>H<jats:sub>4<\/jats:sub>(CN)<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub> (<jats:bold>11b<\/jats:bold>), 1,4\u2010C<jats:sub>6<\/jats:sub>H<jats:sub>4<\/jats:sub>(CN)<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub> (<jats:bold>11c<\/jats:bold>)] occur regioselectively and give the corresponding <jats:italic>N<jats:sup>2<\/jats:sup>N<jats:sup>2<\/jats:sup><\/jats:italic>\u2010bonded bis[5\u2010(cyanophenyl)tetrazol\u20102\u2010ate] <jats:italic>trans<\/jats:italic>\u2010[Pt(N<jats:sub>4<\/jats:sub>CC<jats:sub>6<\/jats:sub>H<jats:sub>4<\/jats:sub>R)<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>(PPh<jats:sub>3<\/jats:sub>)<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>] complexes <jats:bold>12<\/jats:bold> (R = 2\u2010CN <jats:bold>12a<\/jats:bold>, 3\u2010CN <jats:bold>12b<\/jats:bold>, 4\u2010CN <jats:bold>12c<\/jats:bold>).
