The gelation time of the monoliths was controlled by varying the amount of water (2.2 and 22.2 mmol) and HCl (between 4.0\u2009\u00d7\u200910<jats:sup>\u20135<\/jats:sup> and 8.0\u2009\u00d7\u200910<jats:sup>\u20132<\/jats:sup> mmol) incorporated. Their local structure was characterized by X\u2010ray diffraction, <jats:sup>29<\/jats:sup>Si and <jats:sup>13<\/jats:sup>C nuclear magnetic resonance, mid\u2010infrared and ultraviolet\/visible absorption spectroscopy, and photoluminescence in steady\u2010state and time resolved modes. The effect of [HCl] in the enhancement of the emission quantum yield was quantified.
