The compounds {CuL<jats:sup>1<\/jats:sup>, CuL<jats:sup>1<\/jats:sup><jats:bold>\u00b7<\/jats:bold>0.5Py, CuL<jats:sup>2<\/jats:sup><jats:bold>\u00b7<\/jats:bold>0.375CH<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>Cl<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>, (CuL<jats:sup>3<\/jats:sup>)[Cu(4\u2010Me\u2010Py)<jats:sub>4<\/jats:sub>Cl]Cl<jats:bold>\u00b7<\/jats:bold>2H<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>O, CuL<jats:sup>4<\/jats:sup>, CuL<jats:sup>4<\/jats:sup><jats:bold>\u00b7<\/jats:bold>CHCl<jats:sub>3<\/jats:sub> and CuL<jats:sup>5<\/jats:sup>, as well as the isolated ligand H<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>L<jats:sup>3<\/jats:sup>} were characterised by elemental analysis, spectroscopic methods (IR, UV\/Vis, <jats:sup>1<\/jats:sup>H NMR, EPR) and X\u2010ray crystallography. The formation of a 12\u2010membered central chelate ring in these complexes is effected by the tetramethyldisiloxane unit, which separates the aliphatic chains, thus significantly reducing the mechanical strain in such a chelate ring. We dub this a \u201cshoulder yoke effect\u201d by analogy with the load\u2010spreading ability of such an ancient device. The coordination geometry of copper(II) in Cu<jats:sup>II<\/jats:sup>L<jats:sup>1\u20135<\/jats:sup> can be described as tetrahedrally distorted square\u2010planar. Maximum tetrahedral distortion of the coordination geometry expressed by the parameter <jats:italic>\u03c4<\/jats:italic><jats:sub>4<\/jats:sub> was observed for CuL<jats:sup>1<\/jats:sup> (0.460), while distortion was minimal for the two crystallographically independent molecules of CuL<jats:sup>2<\/jats:sup> (0.219 and 0.284). The Si\u2013O\u2013Si bond angle varies markedly between 169.75(2)\u00b0 for CuL<jats:sup>1<\/jats:sup> and 154.2(3)\u00b0 for CuL<jats:sup>4<\/jats:sup><jats:bold>\u00b7<\/jats:bold>CHCl<jats:sub>3<\/jats:sub>. Charge\u2010density and DFT calculations on CuL<jats:sup>1<\/jats:sup> indicate high ionic character of the Si\u2013O bonds in the tetramethyldisiloxane fragment.
