The X\u2010ray molecular structures of derivatives <jats:bold>2b<\/jats:bold>, <jats:bold>4b<\/jats:bold>, and <jats:bold>4c<\/jats:bold> confirmed their adduct nature, and their bonding and geometrical parameters are influenced by the nature of the Zn\u2013X group. The ionization reaction of the dimethyl Zn species <jats:bold>2a<\/jats:bold> and <jats:bold>2b<\/jats:bold> with the methide abstracting reagent B(C<jats:sub>6<\/jats:sub>F<jats:sub>5<\/jats:sub>)<jats:sub>3<\/jats:sub> in the presence of tetrahydrofuran (THF) afforded the NHC\u2013Zn organocations (1,3\u2010dimesitylimidazol\u20102\u2010ylidene)Zn(Me)(THF)<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub><jats:sup>+<\/jats:sup> (<jats:bold>3a<\/jats:bold><jats:sup>+<\/jats:sup>) and [1,3\u2010(2,6\u2010<jats:italic>i<\/jats:italic>Pr<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>Ph)<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>\u2010imidazol\u20102\u2010ylidene]Zn(Me)(THF)<jats:sup>+<\/jats:sup> (<jats:bold>3b<\/jats:bold><jats:sup>+<\/jats:sup>) as dissociated MeB(C<jats:sub>6<\/jats:sub>F<jats:sub>5<\/jats:sub>)<jats:sub>3<\/jats:sub><jats:sup>\u2013<\/jats:sup> salts, as deduced from NMR spectroscopic data. All of these NHC\u2013Zn compounds and BnOH\/Zn(C<jats:sub>6<\/jats:sub>F<jats:sub>5<\/jats:sub>)<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub> were tested as ring\u2010opening polymerization (ROP) initiators of \u03b2\u2010butyrolactone (\u03b2\u2010BL), <jats:italic>rac<\/jats:italic>\u2010lactide (<jats:italic>rac<\/jats:italic>\u2010LA), and trimethylene carbonate (TMC). Although cations <jats:bold>3a<\/jats:bold><jats:sup>+<\/jats:sup> and <jats:bold>3b<\/jats:bold><jats:sup>+<\/jats:sup> were both inactive ROP initiators, as they appear to decompose prior to any ROP activity, the NHC\u2013Zn(C<jats:sub>6<\/jats:sub>F<jats:sub>5<\/jats:sub>)<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub> compounds readily mediate the ROP of \u03b2\u2010BL, <jats:italic>rac<\/jats:italic>\u2010LA, and TMC to afford the corresponding polymeric materials with a moderate level of control, as deduced from NMR, size\u2010exclusion chromatography (SEC), and mass spectrometric MALDI\u2010TOF data.
