The latter afforded a new compound, namely, [Mn<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>Cl<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>(H<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>L)<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>][MnCl<jats:sub>4<\/jats:sub>]<jats:bold>\u00b7<\/jats:bold>4CH<jats:sub>3<\/jats:sub>CN<jats:bold>\u00b7<\/jats:bold>0.5CHCl<jats:sub>3<\/jats:sub><jats:bold>\u00b7<\/jats:bold>0.4H<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>O (<jats:bold>2<\/jats:bold>), after recrystallisation from 1:1 CHCl<jats:sub>3<\/jats:sub>\/CH<jats:sub>3<\/jats:sub>CN. The co\u2010existence of the free and complexed azomethine groups, phenolato donors, \u03bc\u2010chlorido bridges, and the disiloxane unit were well evidenced by ESI mass spectrometry and FTIR spectroscopy and confirmed by X\u2010ray crystallography. The magnetic measurements revealed an antiferromagnetic interaction between the two high\u2010spin (<jats:italic>S<\/jats:italic> = 5\/2, <jats:italic>g<\/jats:italic> = 2) manganese(II) ions through the \u03bc\u2010chlorido bridging ligands. The electrochemical behaviour of <jats:bold>1<\/jats:bold> and <jats:bold>2<\/jats:bold> has been studied, and details of their redox properties are reported. Both compounds act as catalysts or catalyst precursors in the solvent\u2010free low\u2010power microwave\u2010assisted oxidation of selected secondary alcohols, for example, 1\u2010phenylethanol, cyclohexanol, 2\u2010 and 3\u2010octanol, to the corresponding ketones in the absence of solvent.
