The structural characterization of the carrageenan\u2013silica hybrid particles was performed by using FTIR spectroscopy and solid\u2010state <jats:sup>29<\/jats:sup>Si and <jats:sup>13<\/jats:sup>C NMR spectroscopy and confirmed that \u03ba\u2010carrageenan was covalently linked to the siliceous network via urethane bonds. Zeta\u2010potential measurements indicate the hybrids were functionalized on the surface with sulfonate groups from the polysaccharide.
