They were prepared by direct synthesis in an induction furnace and subsequently annealed at 500 \u00b0C. Their crystal structures were determined through single\u2010crystal X\u2010ray diffraction analysis of the Ce representative [<jats:italic>I<\/jats:italic><jats:styled-content>4<\/jats:styled-content>2<jats:italic>m, tI<\/jats:italic>32\u2010LaMgSn<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>, <jats:italic>Z<\/jats:italic> = 8, <jats:italic>a<\/jats:italic> = 0.82863(3) nm, <jats:italic>c<\/jats:italic> = 1.23129(5) nm] and confirmed by powder X\u2010ray diffraction analysis of the other members of the series. Rietveld refinements were also performed on the homologues with <jats:italic>R<\/jats:italic> = Pr, Tm, and Y. The title phases show a unique space distribution of atoms, characterized by the presence of a Sn\u2013Sn dumbbell distanced at around 0.29 nm. Their structures are related to those of a few binary <jats:italic>AeTt<\/jats:italic><jats:sub>3<\/jats:sub> (<jats:italic>Ae<\/jats:italic> = alkaline earth; <jats:italic>Tt<\/jats:italic> = Si, Ge; <jats:italic>I<\/jats:italic>4\/<jats:italic>mmm<\/jats:italic>, <jats:italic>tI<\/jats:italic>32\u2010YbSi<jats:sub>3<\/jats:sub>) compounds that are stable at high pressure, characterized by a more complex 3D covalently bonded <jats:italic>Tt<\/jats:italic> network.
