The structure of this compound was established by X\u2010ray crystallography revealing a zwitterionic form adopted by the organic ligand. The temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility and the field dependence of the magnetisation indicate the presence of ferromagnetic interactions between paramagnetic d<jats:sup>7<\/jats:sup> cobalt(II) centres (<jats:italic>S<\/jats:italic><jats:sub>Co<\/jats:sub> = 3\/2). The exchange coupling parameter <jats:italic>J<\/jats:italic>(Co1\u2013Co2) = +7.0 cm<jats:sup>\u20131<\/jats:sup> extracted from broken\u2010symmetry (BS) DFT calculations agrees well with the value of +8.8 cm<jats:sup>\u20131<\/jats:sup> determined from the experimental data by fitting them with the Hamiltonian <jats:inline-graphic xmlns:xlink=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xlink\" xlink:href=\"graphic\/ejic201700875-math-0001.png\" xlink:title=\"urn:x-wiley:14341948:media:ejic201700875:ejic201700875-math-0001\"\/>. Electrochemical studies indicate that complex <jats:bold>1<\/jats:bold> is inefficient as a catalyst in electrochemical reduction of protons. One of the reasons is the low stability of the complex in solution. In contrast, <jats:bold>1<\/jats:bold> acts as an effective homogeneous (pre)catalyst in the microwave\u2010assisted neat oxidation of cyclohexane with aqueous <jats:italic>t<\/jats:italic>BuOOH (TBHP).
