These compounds are coordinatively unsaturated and feature a strong Mo\u2261O triple bond. The formation of these complexes proceeds via cationic 14e intermediates [Mo(PNP<jats:sup>Me<\/jats:sup>\u2010<jats:italic>i<\/jats:italic>Pr)(CO)X]<jats:sup>+<\/jats:sup> and requires both molecular oxygen and water. ESI MS measurements with <jats:sup>18<\/jats:sup>O labeled water (H<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub><jats:sup>18<\/jats:sup>O) and molecular oxygen (<jats:sup>18<\/jats:sup>O<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>) indicates that water plays a crucial role in the formation of the Mo\u2261O bond. A plausible mechanism based on DFT calculations is provided.
