The use of eco\u2010friendly heterogeneous catalysts for these reactions is most attractive, albeit good catalytic stability continues a challenge. The as\u2010synthesized Aveiro\u2010Manchester material number 4 (AM\u20104, Na<jats:sub>3<\/jats:sub>(Na,H)Ti<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>O<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>[Si<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>O<jats:sub>6<\/jats:sub>]<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>,2H<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>O) possessed isomerization activity, but limited stability. This versatile precursor material was modified to meet superior performances in the base\u2010catalyzed isomerization of the monosaccharides <jats:sc>d<\/jats:sc>\u2010glucose and <jats:sc>d<\/jats:sc>\u2010xylose, and the disaccharide <jats:sc>d<\/jats:sc>\u2010cellobiose, at 100 \u00b0C. Different alkali and alkaline\u2010earth metals were introduced into AM\u20104, which influenced the catalytic properties.
