The relaxivity of GdPOM is slightly higher than for Gd\u2010DTPA due to second\u2010sphere relaxation effects, but the values for the other paramagnetic LnPOMs are much smaller due to the short <jats:italic>T<\/jats:italic><jats:sub>1e<\/jats:sub> values of their Ln<jats:sup>3+<\/jats:sup>\u2010ions. The NPs have core\u2010shell spherical structures, with LnPOM\u2010containing cores with 9.5\u201328\u2005nm diameters, and 4.0\u201311.0\u2005nm thick amorphous silica shells. In water suspensions, the NPs have negative zeta potentials (\u221232.5 to \u221240.0\u2005mV) and time\u2010dependent hydrodynamic diameters (31\u2013195\u2005nm) reflecting the formation of aggregates. The relaxivities of GdPOM@SiO<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub> NPs suspensions (<jats:italic>r<\/jats:italic><jats:sub>1<\/jats:sub>=10.97 (mM\u2009Gd)<jats:sup>\u22121<\/jats:sup>\u2009s<jats:sup>\u22121<\/jats:sup>, <jats:italic>r<\/jats:italic><jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>=12.02 (mM\u2009Gd)<jats:sup>\u22121<\/jats:sup>\u2009s<jats:sup>\u22121<\/jats:sup>, 0.47\u2005T, 25\u2009\u00b0C) are considerably larger than for the GdPOM solutions, indicating that their silica shell is significantly porous to water. This increase is limited by the agglomeration of the complexes in the NPs core, limiting their access to water to those at the core surface. Replacing half of the Gd<jats:sup>3+<\/jats:sup> ions by Eu<jats:sup>3+<\/jats:sup> decreases the NPs <jats:italic>r<\/jats:italic><jats:sub>1<\/jats:sub> and <jats:italic>r<\/jats:italic><jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub> relaxivities at 0.47\u2005T to 20\u2009% and 35\u2009% of their initial values, which are still considerable, but does not affect the efficient luminescence properties of the Eu<jats:sup>3+<\/jats:sup> centers.
