Polymeric\n                    <jats:bold>2<\/jats:bold>\n                    was used in the extractive and catalytic oxidative desulfurization (ECODS) of a model diesel under sustainable conditions, with H\n                    <jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>\n                    O\n                    <jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>\n                    as oxidant and ethanol as extraction solvent, achieving near\u2010quantitative elimination of 1\u2010benzothiophene, dibenzothiophene, 4\u2010methyldibenzothiophene, and 4,6\u2010dimethyldibenzothiophene after 2\u2009h. The activity was largely retained for several desulfurization cycles. Characterization of species isolated from the treatment of\n                    <jats:bold>2<\/jats:bold>\n                    with H\n                    <jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>\n                    O\n                    <jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>\n                    in ethanol indicated a catalytic process involving the in situ formation of the homogeneous catalyst [MoO(O\n                    <jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>\n                    )\n                    <jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>\n                    (bpm)] which is retained in the extraction phase. Application of the ECODS system to a real diesel (1335\u2009ppm S) led to a sulfur removal of 54%. When the ionic liquid [BMIM][PF\n                    <jats:sub>6<\/jats:sub>\n                    ] was employed as the extraction solvent (BMIM\u2009=\u20091\u2010butyl\u20103\u2010methylimidazolium), the quantitative elimination of S compounds from the model fuel was achieved within 2\u2009h. In recycling experiments, loss of activity due to the accumulation and precipitation of sulfones could be nullified by their removal between cycles, allowing the catalyst\/[BMIM][PF\n                    <jats:sub>6<\/jats:sub>\n                    ] phase to be used for at least five cycles without loss of desulfurization efficiency.\n
